Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

As summer comes to a close, and we look forward to a new season, we continue our series on my 7 Fs: Faith, Family, Friends, Fellowship, Fun, Fitness, and Finance. The 7 Fs are guiding principles which, I believe, are essential to living a life balanced in mind, body, and soul. This month, we focus on Faith.

We have all had days where we wished life did not have to be so difficult. Recall the last time you complained when your day did not go exactly as planned or when you allowed a minor inconvenience to set the tone for the rest of the day. Now, imagine getting through your busy day without hands or feet. Picture your life without the ability to walk, care for your basic needs, or even embrace your loved ones. Meet Nick Vujicic, a young man born without arms and legs but who refused to allow his physical condition to limit his lifestyle. When I first heard the remarkable story of Vujicic and how he overcame enormous hardships, I was inspired to consider my own measure of faith in the face of adversity. Faith is an empowering belief whereas our beliefs determine our actions and our actions determine our outcomes. We show our hope for something that we cannot yet see no matter how things may look in the natural. Like Vujicic, who had no reason to believe he would accomplish more in his young life than most people achieve in a lifetime, we may not always see the path in front of us, but when we walk by faith, we don’t have to!  When we take actions on faith, we are willing to do things others simply will not do, and we discover new opportunities that could change the outcomes of our lives.

So, I challenge you to embrace this most empowering belief called faith on a daily basis, and you will be amazed at what you are able to achieve!

“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” Oprah Winfrey

Peace and blessings,

How Nick Vujicic Triumphed Against All Odds

Born in Australia without arms or legs, Nick Vujicic has become a true symbol of triumph. After enduring years of torment and attempting suicide at age 10, Nick says, he had a powerful awakening. As a teenager, he sealed his faith in God, setting the stage for what was to become an amazing journey. Nick credits the love of his parents, loved ones, and faith in God for overcoming tremendous adversity and living a life filled with joy and purpose. Nick's recent appearance on Oprah Winfrey's Life Class on the OWN television network sent a powerful message to us all about the power of faith in action and making a choice live an abundant, purpose-driven life.

Literacy Programs of New Jersey: Making a Difference

This past May, I was humbled and honored by the opportunity to deliver the keynote address at Literacy Programs of New Jersey’s (LPNJ) annual Celebrating Literacy Gala where I spoke about the important work LPNJ is doing in our communities every day. Believe it or not, New Jersey is tied for the sixth worst literacy rate in the United States yet is the third most affluent! Since 1981, LPNJ has been changing these statistics by providing free and confidential adult literacy services and empowering adults to participate more fully with their families, schools, jobs and communities. LPNJ provides a safety net for adult learners who need and want to do better for their families and communities. Last year alone, LPNJ tutored nearly 900 students and trained 70 new volunteer tutors! LPNJ’s motto is, “If no parent is left behind, no child is left behind.”

For more information about LPNJ or to donate directly to its programming, visit www.lpnj.org or call (732) 432-8000.
